Freelance Senior / Principal Mechanical Building Services Engineer

We are currently looking for an experienced Senior or Principal Mechanical Building Services Engineer on a freelance basis to join a well-established, award-winning building services consultancy in Stockport.
This consultancy is recognised for delivering innovative, sustainable MEP design across healthcare, commercial, and public sector projects, and is at the forefront of net zero and low-carbon building design. They are seeking a highly skilled freelance engineer to support high-profile projects, lead design teams, and provide expert guidance across multiple complex projects.
The Role
As a freelance Senior/Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will take responsibility for delivering mechanical building services projects of varying scale, from specialist schemes to major developments over £100m.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading the mechanical design and delivery of projects across healthcare, commercial, and public sectors
Acting as a client-facing technical lead, advising on both commercial and technical matters
Mentoring and guiding junior engineers and project teams
Supporting business development and client relationships on a freelance basis
Managing project planning, resource coordination, and delivery
Providing technical advice for healthcare projects, including HTM and HBN compliance
Coordinating with other engineering disciplines on multidisciplinary projects
Producing detailed designs using IES / IES-VE, AutoCAD, MagiCAD, and Revit
Ensuring designs meet sustainability, energy efficiency, and net zero carbon requirements
About You
The ideal freelance candidate will have extensive UK consultancy experience in building services design and be confident managing both projects and client relationships.
You will ideally have:
BEng or MEng in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering
Chartered Engineer status
Membership of MCIBSE or MIMechE
Ideally IHEEM membership or healthcare sector experience
Knowledge of HTMs and HBNs, or transferable laboratory/cleanroom design experience
Experience delivering new build, refurbishment, and retrofit projects
Strong commercial awareness and project management skills
Excellent client management and communication skills
A proactive, flexible, and problem-solving approach
