Associate Mechanical Engineer - London
We are partnering with a highly regarded consultancy specialising in integrated building services design, working across mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineering to deliver high-quality, coordinated solutions for the built environment. They are seeking an Associate to join their senior leadership team and play a pivotal role in shaping projects, people, and client relationships.
This is a strategic and client-facing position that blends technical excellence with team leadership and commercial responsibility. The successful individual will lead an internal engineering team, oversee multiple projects, and contribute to the continued growth and development of the business.
The Role
As an Associate, you will operate as both Team Coordinator and Project Lead, taking ownership of the performance and development of your team while ensuring the successful delivery of projects from concept through to completion.
Key aspects of the role include:
Leadership & People Management
Acting as line manager for a team of engineers and technicians
Overseeing workload planning, wellbeing, and career development
Inspiring technical excellence and nurturing emerging talent
Project Delivery & Technical Leadership
Leading engineering design across multiple projects and stages
Coordinating building services design with external design teams
Driving innovative, sustainable, and forward-thinking solutions
Ensuring compliance with Building Regulations, British Standards, CIBSE guidance, and CDM requirements
Commercial & Resource Management
Managing project fees, profitability, and resourcing
Forecasting workload and collaborating with directors on business planning
Taking responsibility for the overall success of projects within the team
Client Engagement & Business Development
Acting as a senior client contact and trusted advisor
Representing the business at meetings, presentations, and industry events
Strengthening relationships with architects, consultants, and end clients
Supporting new business initiatives and repeat work generation
Site & Construction Support
Visiting site to monitor installation against design intent
Liaising with contractors and producing inspection reports
Internal Contribution
Supporting the development of internal processes and standards
Promoting a collaborative and positive company culture
Maintaining CPD in line with professional body guidance
About You
The ideal candidate will be an experienced building services engineer with a strong blend of technical authority, leadership ability, and commercial awareness.
Essential Experience & Qualifications
Proven experience leading projects and coordinating multidisciplinary design
Strong understanding of UK Building Regulations, CIBSE guidance, and British Standards
Experience managing project finances and resources
Competence in thermal modelling software (e.g. IES)
Knowledge of sustainability and environmental design principles
Understanding of CDM designer responsibilities
Personal Attributes

Excellent communication and stakeholder management ability
Commercially minded with business development awareness
Highly organised with strong attention to detail
Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities
