Flood Risk & Drainage Engineer
Location: Littlehampton (1 day per week in office) or Fully Remote
Salary: Up to £40,000 + Benefits
Type: Full-time, Permanent
A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join a Local Authority team as a Flood Risk & Drainage Engineer, supporting the management of drainage, SuDS and flood risk across the region. This role is ideal for someone with experience in municipal drainage, planning application review or flood management who is looking for a stable, varied, and rewarding engineering position within the public sector.
The Opportunity
You will play a key role in assessing planning applications from a drainage and flood risk perspective, supporting the council's statutory responsibilities, and contributing to the delivery of flood mitigation and land drainage schemes.
This role offers flexible working, with the option to be fully remote or attend the office in Littlehampton one day per week.
Key Duties & Required Experience
In this position, you will:
-Review planning applications, assessing surface water, SuDS and land drainage proposals.
-Inspect and assess municipal drainage assets, preparing reports and recommendations.
-Assist with the design and development of drainage and flood mitigation works.
-Use CAD, GIS and surveying equipment to support technical design and analysis.
-Contribute to feasibility studies, cost assessments, and scheme development.
-Liaise with internal teams, consultants, residents, and government bodies including the Environment Agency.
-Support emergency flood response activities where required.
-Assist with preparing technical documents, tender packages and project reports.
You should have:
-A civil or environmental engineering qualification.
-Experience in drainage design, SuDS, or land drainage assessment.
-Understanding of drainage legislation, SuDS guidance, and the Flood & Water Management Act 2010.
-Experience working with Local Authorities, EA, or similar bodies (approx. 2+ years).
-Ability to use CAD, GIS, and standard engineering tools.
-Knowledge of health and safety in design and construction.
-CSCS card (or willingness to obtain).
