Civils Technical Manager

A leading UK multidisciplinary engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Civils Technical Manager to take a senior technical leadership role within its Bristol office. This is a key position for an accomplished civil engineer who enjoys combining hands-on technical oversight with team leadership, project delivery, and a degree of commercial and business development responsibility.
This role offers the opportunity to act as a recognised technical authority across a broad civil engineering portfolio, while helping to shape the growth, quality, and reputation of a well-established regional team.
The Role
As Civils Technical Manager, you will play a central role in ensuring technical excellence across infrastructure and development projects. You will oversee design quality, coordinate multidisciplinary inputs, support and mentor engineers, and contribute to the financial and strategic performance of the civils team.
Alongside technical leadership, you will support client development, contribute to bids and proposals, and help strengthen long-term client relationships.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Design Oversight
Lead, coordinate, and review civil engineering designs, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and technical robustness
Oversee feasibility studies, technical assessments, and engineering analyses
Provide guidance across highways, drainage, earthworks, and interfaces with structures
Ensure designs align with UK standards, regulations, and internal quality procedures
Project Delivery & Multidisciplinary Coordination
Coordinate technical inputs from geotechnical, environmental, structures, planning, and transportation teams
Work closely with project managers to manage resources, programmes, and deliverables
Participate in design reviews, client meetings, and technical workshops
Quality, Risk & Compliance
Undertake technical audits, design checks, and risk reviews
Promote best practice in modelling, documentation, and engineering processes
Ensure compliance with UK design standards, CDM duties, and ISO-aligned quality systems
Team Leadership & Development
Mentor and develop engineers across the team
Encourage collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous professional development
Promote a culture of innovation, sustainability, and technical excellence
Client & Business Development
Act as a senior technical contact for clients, contractors, and regulators
Support bid preparation, technical proposals, and workload planning
Assist in developing and expanding the regional client base
Monitor and report on team financial performance
What We're Looking For
Degree in Civil Engineering (BEng/MEng or equivalent)
Chartered Engineer status (CEng, MICE or equivalent) preferred
Significant experience delivering civil engineering designs with technical responsibility
Proven background in multidisciplinary infrastructure or development projects
Strong knowledge of UK design standards and regulatory frameworks
Confident communicator with strong leadership and stakeholder management skills
Organised, commercially aware, and comfortable operating as a technical authority
