Principal Geotechnical Engineer
Bristol or Cardiff
Permanent | Full-Time | Hybrid working (3 days in office)
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Principal Geotechnical Engineer to join a well-established multidisciplinary consultancy with a strong pipeline of civil and structural projects across the UK and overseas.

My client has seen continued growth and is now looking for a Chartered (or Senior) Geotechnical Engineer to take a leading role in supporting planning and engineering teams on a diverse portfolio of work - from early-stage development and ground engineering assessments to detailed design.

The Role
You'll take responsibility for specifying, managing, and interpreting ground investigations, delivering geotechnical assessments, and developing design solutions for a variety of infrastructure and building projects. The work is varied - some commissions are standalone ground engineering projects, while others form part of wider civil and structural design schemes.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Preparing and reviewing geotechnical reports and assessments

  • Conducting proof-of-concept checks, slope stability, and settlement analyses

  • Designing foundations, cuttings, embankments, and retaining structures

  • Developing earthworks specifications and mitigation measures for legacy mining sites

  • Contributing to Geotechnical Design Reports and feedback in line with CD622

About You

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or Geology with a postgraduate qualification in Geotechnical Engineering

  • Chartered status (CEng or equivalent)

  • Strong technical understanding of EC7 and UK design codes

  • Proficient in geotechnical software (Rocscience and Geo5 preferred)

  • Experience preparing drawings (ARC GIS and CAD desirable)

  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills

  • Confident managing client relationships and leading design delivery

  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel when required

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a growing consultancy where you'll have autonomy, technical variety, and a clear path for professional development within a collaborative team.
If you're looking for a role where you can take the lead on geotechnical delivery and influence major infrastructure and development projects, I'd love to hear from you.
